“Our Longtail”
The violet-tailed sylph is found in Colombia and Ecuador. The species inhabits cloudforest and semi-open landscapes like the transition of forest to grassland and grassland with trees and shrubs. In elevation it generally ranges from 1.000 m to 2.000 m. The male long-tailed sylphs are 18 to 21 cm long including the 10 to 15 cm outer tail feathers. The female is significantly smaller. The male's elongated tail is heavily forked, while the female's is not. The violet-tailed sylph's diet is nectar and small insects. It usually hovers at flowers to feed but often clings to them. It catches insects by hawking from a perch or by gleaning from vegetation. The IUCN has assessed the violet-tailed sylph as being of Least Concern.
