The Shining Fairy is an apodiform bird species in the family Trochilidae, found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. It inhabits deciduous forests, thickets, stubble, and semi-arid woodlands below 1,300 m elevation.
The glossy elf probably obtains its nectar from plants of the genera Inga, Lantana camara and the families of the verbena and myrtle. It hunts arthropods in flight. The breeding biology of the Glossy Elf has not been studied yet. This small bird is considered a rather quiet contemporary. When feeding, it emits a high-pitched sharp tsip. In buzzing flight, the wing beat sounds deep bee-like.
